Project 01: Mosaic Coaster * Direct Method

Dive into the art of mosaic with this online tutorial on creating a stunning mosaic coaster (trivet) using the Direct Method. Perfect for all skill levels, this concise course will guide you through each step with ease.

You’ll begin by choosing a base that suits your project and giving it a little preparation, whether that’s keying the surface or applying a waterproof membrane. From there, you’ll sketch or trace your design directly onto the base, setting the stage for your mosaic. With your pattern ready, you’ll gather your tesserae—glass or ceramic tiles—and prepare them so they’re just right for the look you want.

As the pieces come together, you’ll learn how to cut and shape them with tools like the Leponitt Wheeled Nippers, the Score ’n Snap Tool, and a Metal Tile File, making sure each one fits seamlessly into your design. You’ll secure them in place with Weldbond adhesive, finish with sanded grout for strength, and protect your coaster with a final sealer. To make it truly yours, you might even decorate the back with a signature, a small artwork, or a poem.

This first project introduces you to the Direct Mosaic Method, and once you’ve mastered it, you’ll move on to the Project 002 Indirect Method;  where tesserae are arranged in reverse on paper before being transferred to the base—a wonderful technique for mixed media and smooth finishes. From there, you’ll explore Project 003 the Mosaic on Mesh method, a versatile and exciting way to take your designs to the next level.
